Memorial Bridge Tunnel traffic control replacement![]() The MMMBT system controls 263 dynamic signs and signals, 17 over height detectors, and 72 loop detectors on approximately 7 miles of Interstate 664 as it crosses Hampton Roads to connect the cities of Newport News and Suffolk, Virginia. The project called for replacement of the ten year old existing traffic control system (TOMAC), which used a MODCOMP® mini computer with custom written code in FORTRAN, and MODCOMP® assembly language to effect control. The replacement system (NewTON), was to provide error free, real time graphical depiction and control of all traffic control devices at the operator's workstation. Moreover, the new system was to interface with an existing map board and the Graphic Traffic Information System (GTIS), performing all of the functions of the existing system and operating on a Microsoft Windows® 2000 based client server network. The work also included renovating the console, furnishing, coding, installing, testing and integrating the new system software and hardware, as well as equipment supplied by VDOT. This project was completed in early 2002. |
