Elizabeth River
Tunnel

The Elizabeth River Tunnel connects the cities of Norfolk and Portsmouth,
Virginia as part of I-264. Tunnel and apprroach traffic is controlled
through 59 roadway loops and over height detectors and 132 signs and signals.
This project required the replacement of the existing TOMAC system with
a fault-tolerant NewTON system, replacement of the operator consoles,
and upgrading the map board with LED.The project was complicated by a
drawbridge controlled by the Army Corps of Engineers in close proximity
to the Tunnel approach on the Norfolk side, and which, by necessity, can
override ERT controls.
The project also
called for redesign of the GTIS system which included replacement of the
GTIS server with one running Windows NT and, as a interim measure
pending its conversion to NewTON, installation of a MODCOMP® interface,
known as MODPLC®, (developed by our sister company, Crystal Computing,
Inc.) to GTIS at MMMBT. For further on MODPLC® see MODPLC.com
